On 17th February, 2026, a formal online meeting took place, at which the rector of the ONU, Vyacheslav Truba, and the rector of Klaipėda University, Artūras Razbadauskas, signed the provisions of the Memorandum of Understanding. The memorandum outlines the main areas and principles of cooperation between the two institutions in the educational and scientific spheres.

Expanding academic mobility programs, intensifying scientific exchange, coordinating efforts within the framework of alliances of European universities, creating a basis for joint educational and scientific projects – all these opportunities are laid down in the provisions of the Memorandum of Understanding. All these aspects are necessary to form a solid foundation for the future partnership between Klaipėda University and I. I. Mechnikov ONU.

On 13th February, 2026, as part of the visit of the Ambassador of Odesa in Lithuania, Alvydas Medalinskas, to Odessa I. I. Mechnikov National University, a meeting was held with the rector Vyacheslav Truba and the head of the international relations department Yurii Hrinchenko, during which the current state and prospects of cooperation with Lithuanian partners were discussed. With Alvydas Medalinskas’ assistance, an online meeting with the leadership of Klaipėda University was organized, headed by the rector Artūras Razbadauskas, and with the participation of the first vice-rector of ONU Maiia Nikolaeva and the vice-rector of Ƶ international cooperation Andrii Smitiukh.

On the meeting the parties identified the priorities of the partnership, in particular, the conclusion of an agreement on academic mobility Erasmus +, the signing of a memorandum and the development of cooperation within the framework of EU-CONEXUS. The rectors also noted the positive results of the meeting and expressed hope for further intensification of mobility after the establishment of peace in Ukraine.

On the 16th-18th of April 2025, the Second International Research-to-Practice Conference “Climate Service: Science and Education” took place at the Odesa I.I. Mechnikov National University, which attended by 165 participants from 11 countries.

The ONU Rector, Prof. Vyacheslav Truba, greeted the participants with a welcoming foreword where he noted the importance of holding such conferences for a sustainable development of the country during the times of climate change.

During the plenary session, such globally renowned experts in the climate field as Prof. A. Baklanov (University of Copenhagen), and Dr. P. Parrish (SERCOM), Dr. Vilfran Mufuma Okija (World Meteorological Organization), Dr. Hanna Lappalainen (University of Helsinki), and Dr. Jon Xavier Olano Pozo (Rovira i Virgili University) presented their reports.

Within the three sections of the conference:

  • Issues of climate services
  • Education in climate services
  • Climate risks and adaptation to climate change

over 70 oral and poster reports were presented.

The conference continued the tradition launched in September 2021, when the First conference took place, and this year conference is evidence of preserving the scientific potential of the Odesa State Environmental University at the I. I. Mechnikov ONU Faculty of Hydrometeorology and Ecology.

On the 18th of April 2025, Rector of Odesa I. I. Mechnikov National University Vyacheslav Truba welcomed a delegation from the German volunteer organization ERMSTALHILFT e. V. that arrived in Ukraine with a humanitarian mission. The First vice-rector Maya Nikolieva, the vice-rector for research, teaching and international cooperation Andrii Smitiukh, and the Head of the Office for the International Relations Yurii Hrinchenko attended the meeting. The German delegation consisted of 8 people, led by the Director of Board ERMSTALHILFT e. V. Simon Nowotni, along with the vice-director of the ERMSTALHILFT e. V., Martin Salzer, and the former member of the Bundestag, Beate Müller-Gemmeke.

At the meeting, the participants discussed the issues of the humanitarian situation in Ukraine, possible directions of international aid and relief for refugees and internally displaced people, the development of the assistance programs for facilitating participation of higher education institutions in humanitarian actions, and prospects of cooperation between the Ukrainian and German educational institutions. The delegations exchanged their views on the critical issues and conditions of humanitarian aid, possibilities for civil activity in Ukraine and Germany, challenges for educational system in Ukraine, and perspectives for strengthening cooperation between Odesa region and Baden-Württemberg federal land.

After the meeting, the German delegation also attended the paleontology museum of the university.

On the 7th-11th of April 2025, an offline part of the VII training in the Erasmus+ ClimEd project titled “Developing skills to use climatic information and services for various climate-dependent branches of economy” took place at the Rovira i Virgili University, Spain. In the course of the training, the participants were learning to work with climate indexes and specialized software for creating sectorial climate web-services.

A team of ONU including vice-rectors Maya Nikolaeva, Oleksandr Hrihoriiev and Andrii Smitiukh, as well as the Head of the Land Hydrology Department Valeriia Ovcharuk, the Head of the Agrometeorology and Agroecology Department Oksana Volvach, Associate Professors of Meteorology and Climatology Department Larysa Nedostrelova and Inna Khomenko (the leader of the ClimEd project at the ONU took part at the training on place. Together with their colleagues from other Ukrainian higher education institutions, the participants have presented their climate services projects on the Shiny App platform for further use in the recreational sector in Odesa and the Carpathian Mountains, agriculture, and healthcare. 7 more ONU staff members attended the training online and will present their projects till 25th April.

The ONU participants also took part at the Erasmus+ ClimEd steering committee meeting, where the perspectives of the project execution in 2025-26 were discussed.

Climate services play the key role in counteracting the climate change consequences by providing scientifically proven information necessary for effective decision-making in various sectors-ranging from agriculture to healthcare. These services aid in the foretelling of the extreme weather, the planning of adaptive actions and the minimizing of the vulnerability of communities and economies to climate risks. Owing to these climate services, governments, businesses, and communities can take a proactive stance, reducing losses and increasing tolerance to the environmental changes.

The participants of the meeting discussed the possibilities of cooperation between the educational institutions and agreed on the need for further expansion of the partnership.

On the 7th -11th April the first spring school for approbation of the educational course C3 – Sustainable pathways and risk management in times of crises – took place at the Technical University of Liberec, Czech Republic, Зображення under the international project ERASMUS+ TransLearn.

During the intensive Ukrainian education-seekers mastered the following:

  • risk management (esp. ecological risks),
  • technogenic activity risks evaluation,
  • adaptation to climate changes in crises situations.

The participants from ONU were: prof. Angelina Chugai – the Head of the Ecology and Environmental Protection department, and students of the 2nd year of the specialty “101- Ecology”– Vladyslava Horkovenko and Diana Plokhotniuk.

Currently, the approbation for the next course, C1 – Strategic adaptive management for sustainable reconstruction and restoration – is in process, due to begin in May!

On March 24, 2025, on the eve of Greece’s Independence Day, a meeting took place between the Consul General of the Hellenic Republic in Odesa, Mr. Christos Zacharopoulos, and the Rector of Odesa I. I. Mechnikov National University, Vyacheslav Truba. The meeting was also attended by the vice-rector for research, teaching and international cooperation Andrii Smitiukh , the dean of the Faculty of Romance and Germanic Philology Nina Kravchenko and the head of the International Relations Department Yurii Hrinchenko.

In his welcoming word, Vyacheslav Truba spoke about the long and fruitful cooperation of our university with Greek partners, which began from the day the university was founded. Greek history, Greek culture, scientific achievements of Greece have shaped modern science, and Odesa University has joined the study of the heritage of Greek civilization in the Northern Black Sea Region. The efforts of two faculties – the Faculty Romance and Germanic Philology and the Faculty of International Relations, Political Science and Sociology provide the opportunity for ONU students to study Modern Greek as a foreign language.

Before the war, ONU scientists and teachers visited Greek institutions regularly, and vice versa - colleagues from Greece came to Odesa. Today, academic mobility agreements have been signed with three Greek universities within the framework of the ERASMUS+ program, under which regular trips of teachers and students for study, internships or teaching take place.

In his return greetings, the Consul General emphasized that he was glad to begin his term in Odesa with a visit to ONU. For Greece, Odesa holds a special place on the map of Ukraine due to our strong historical ties. Odesa played a significant role in the Greek liberation movement, which led to the declaration of its independence. Mr. Christos V. Zacharopoulosnoted that the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Greece is developing programs to support the study of the Greek language and culture despite the years of difficult economic situation, and considers ONU as one of the priority institutions for the development and expansion of Greek studies in Ukraine, and in Europe in general. At the end of the meeting, Mr. Christos V. Zacharopoulos assured that the Consulate General of the Hellenic Republic in Ukraine will make every effort to support initiatives to develop scientific and educational partnership between ONU and Greek partners. In turn, Rector Vyacheslav Truba congratulated the Consul General on the upcoming Greek Independence Day, which is celebrated on March 25, and wished prosperity and peace to the Greek people.

The delegation of Odesa I.I. Mechnikov National University visited Harbin, China, and took part in the International Seminar on Cooperation between Ukrainian and Chinese Experts 2024, which was held at Harbin Engineering University.

The delegation included Vice-Rectors Andrii Smitiukh and Oleksandr Hryhoriev, Director of the Centre of International Education Nataliia Kriuchkova, Head of the Office for International Relations Yurii Hrynchenko, Director of the Interdepartmental Scientific and Educational Physical and Technical Center of the Ministry of Education and Science of Ukraine Yaroslav Lepikh, Head of the of the Department of Land Hydrology Valeriia Ovcharuk, Head of the Department of Ecology and Environmental Protection Angelina Chuhai, Professor of the Department of Oceanology and Marine Environmental Management Mykola Berlinskyi, Associate Professor of the Department of Meteorology and Climatology Inna Khomenko, and Associate Professor of the Department of Algebra, Geometry and Differential Equations Nataliia Sharai.

The members of the delegation made presentations, participated in discussions and held a series of talks with representatives of Chinese universities on the prospects for further cooperation.
