Odesa I.I. Mechnikov National University is an associated widening partner in a prestigious EU grant for building research excellence

On the 1st of February the international research project EU-CONEXUS ENABLES: Promoting excellence through innovative eco-systems (Project Nr. 101136822, funded by European Union in the frames of Horizon-Widera-2023-ACCESS-03-01 funding program), in which Odesa I.I. Mechnikov National University is a partner, has started.

The project was initiated within the framework of EU-CONEXUS Alliance. The goal of EU-CONEXUS Enables is to create a cutting-edge environment that fosters long-term collaborations between the Alliance and its partners, which include stakeholders and municipalities. The project aims to develop long-lasting solutions to the challenges of sustainable coastal cities (Smart Urban Coastal Sustainability – SMUCS) using the Digital Twin methodology. Key aspects of the project’s strategy are to promote effective knowledge sharing, pooling of resources and collaboration between all stakeholders.

The project provides opportunities for the development of skills of the involved researchers in a number of areas, such as networking, team building and management, fundraising and mobility. One of the priorities of the project is to help researchers successfully build their careers and focus on leadership development, well-being, social impact and career opportunities beyond academia. The EU-CONEXUS Stakeholder Academy will facilitate stakeholder engagement and networking, education and collaboration. Collaborative research aimed at addressing SmUCS challenges through a variety of programs, including postdoctoral mobility, microgrants, and funding for research work within the framework of PhD cotutelle, will be among the main activities.

The competition aims to engage teams of young scientists who work or study at universities or research institutions of the Ministry of Education and Science. Odesa Mechnikov National University: holds the XVII International Summer School “Molecular Biology, Biotechnology and Biomedicine”

From June 20 to July 12, 2022, Odesa Mechnikov National University holds the XVII International Summer School “Molecular Biology, Biotechnology and Biomedicine”.

Within the Summer School framework from June 20 to June 25 a laboratory course“Cloning, Protein Expression and Purification” is planned, if possible. The number of participants is limited. Working language is English.

Information about Ilya Ilf -wiki

Ilya Ilf, pseudonym of Iehiel-Leyb Arnoldovich Faynzilberg (Russian: Илья Арнольдович Файнзильберг^[1]), (October 15 [O.S. October 3] 1897 in Odessa – April 13, 1937, Moscow), was a popular Soviet journalist and writer of Jewish origin who usually worked in collaboration with Yevgeni Petrov during the 1920s and 1930s. Their duo was known simply as Ilf and Petrov. Together they published two popular comedy novels The Twelve Chairs (1928) and The Little Golden Calf (1931), as well as a satirical book One-storied America (often translated as Little Golden America) that documented their journey through the United States between 1935 and 1936.

His father was a Jewish bank clerk. He graduated from a technical school in 1913 and held various positions, including time at the telephone company and a military plant. After the Revolution, he began working as a journalist, editing several humor magazines, and joined the Odessa Union of Poets.

In 1923, he relocated to Moscow and took employment at the newspaper Gudok [ru] (roughly "Beep", also a type of stringed instrument), a publication for railway workers. His contributions consisted mostly of satirical pieces. It was there that he met his writing partner, Petrov.

Ilf had been diagnosed with tuberculosis in the 1920s. He thought it was in remission, but he was diagnosed with it again during his trip to America, and he died not long after returning to Moscow.

I. I. Mechnikov Odessa National University receives a prestigious EU grant for collaborative research on tuberculosis

Over 1 Million Euro from the European Union is directed to development of new approaches in diagnostic and treatment of tuberculosis within a network project entitled Innovation in Tuberculosis - INNOVA4TB. The grant comes from Marie Skłodowska-Curie Actions Horizon 2020-RISE program.

The project is a network that joins academic institutions, hospitals, research centers and companies from six countries: Spain, Ukraine, Moldova, Sweden, Germany and Chile. INNOVA4TB consortium is multinational and contributes to the integration of ONU in the global scientific community. Project members will visit each other’s organizations, work together, exchange and generate new skills and knowledge in several areas connected to tuberculosis diagnostics and treatment. Moreover, this collaboration will strengthen the interaction of academic and non-academic institutions inside of Ukraine seeing that ONU will be involved in cooperative research with Odessa Regional Center for Socially Dangerous Diseases.

Tuberculosis is one of the top ten killer diseases in the world leading to 1.5 million deaths every year, about as much as AIDS and malaria together. Drug-resistance of bacteria causing tuberculosis is growing. Treatment of a single drug-resistant tuberculosis case can last up to two years and cost over 100 000 Euro. Ukraine ranks second in Europe for the incidence of tuberculosis. Every fourth case of tuberculosis in Ukraine is caused by multidrug-resistant strains of mycobacteria. Furthermore, Odessa region is one of the leaders in the highest incidence and morbidity.

The World Health Organization, WHO, and the United Nations, UN, stress that new methods for tuberculosis management are needed to eliminate this infectious airborne disease. Current situation in Ukraine is complicated by the lack of effective modern diagnostic tools.

The INNOVA4TB project is a sequel of the cooperation started in 2013 with another Marie Skłodowska-Curie Actions grant coordinated by Umeå University (Sweden). Multidisciplinary and international collaboration between research teams from ONU and partner organizations resulted in identification of blood biomarkers that can be useful for progress monitoring during tuberculosis treatment. In the future, it may lead to faster treatment of severe tuberculosis cases. The consortium has also mapped drug-resistant outbreaks of Mycobacterium tuberculosis in Southern Ukraine. These results could contribute to the development of better epidemiological control of tuberculosis in Ukraine and other European countries.

Within INNOVA4TB, the plan is to validate previously obtained results on treatment monitoring biomarkers in a larger cohort and investigate the metabolite-biomarkers in the context of host-pathogen interaction with a potential therapeutic use.

The coordinator of the project is the Institute for Health Science Research Germans Trias i Pujol, Barcelona, Spain, a long-term collaborator of ONU.

Multidisciplinary team of Odessa National University is represented by researchers, teachers and PhD students and leaded by NASU corresponding member, DSc in biology, prof. V.
