The Faculty of Romance-Germanic Philology provides an educational process by 154 teachers, including professors, associate professors, doctors and PhDs. In addition, the faculty employs lecturers from Italy, Spain, Greece, Germany, France. Faculty students have the opportunity to go to language training and study in Greece, Italy, Germany, Spain, France, the USA and others.

The diploma of ONU as an educational institution of the highest (fourth) level of accreditation meets the domestic and foreign standards. Students studying for the Master's Degree receive the qualifications of a philologist, a teacher of two foreign languages 鈥嬧�媋nd literatures, a translator of two foreign languages.

Students learn the first and second foreign languages as well as the third foreign language (optional: French, German, Spanish, Italian, Modern Greek, Romanian, Chinese). The Faculty provides a unique opportunity for English-language applicants to study at the German, French and Spanish Philology departments at an absolute beginner level (without prior knowledge of these languages). Through intensive techniques, students reach the required level of language competence in two years and continue their studies according to the relevant program.

The total number of ECTS credits is:

• 240 ECTS credits for the bachelor's training curriculum
• 90 ECTS credits for the Master's degree curriculum

Students also study the basic disciplines that constitute an education in the sphere of Humanities and special courses.

Students who are enrolled in public procurement are eligible for the scholarship:

Students of RGF faculty (if necessary) live in a hostel 鈩� 4 of the university, which is located at the address Odessa, Dovzhenko Str., 5.

Students of RGF faculty win at the All-Ukrainian Olympiads, competitions of scientific and creative works, sports competitions in Ukraine and abroad.

The Faculty actively supports international partnerships with foreign universities, teachers receive internships abroad, students can participate in affiliate programs. More about international cooperation can be found here.

Scientific cooperation with foreign organizations is carried out in the following areas: joint conducting of scientific events; improving professional competence of teachers through internships in foreign educational institutions, as well as participation in international seminars; joint publishing with scientists from other countries.

Since September 2013 ONU has been an associate member of a powerful international association - the University Agency of Francophonie (AUF). The agency brings together 800 university educational institutions in more than 100 countries that use the French language in teaching and research, therefore, there is a single channel for communication.

Students, postgraduate students, teachers, researchers, managers of research topics and projects, representatives of university administration - everyone who wants to optimize their own experience and gain new one in their field through cooperation with their foreign colleagues under an umbrella of the French language can count on support and participation in one or another project.

2010

• The winners of the Pan-Ukrainian Olympiad in German, Isaeva Irina (University of Bremen) and Samotiaha Nataliia (Viadrina University of Frankfurt-on-Oder) get postgraduate education in Germany.
• 30 students from different departments that study Greek language visited Greece. Several Universities have organized student admissions and training during the summer.

• On November 23, 2010, the Romans Germanic Philology Faculty was visited by the Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary Ambassador of Germany in Ukraine, Mr. Hans J眉rgen Gaimzet, who met with faculty teachers and students.
• November 30, 2010 Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of France in Ukraine Mr. Jacques For met with teachers and students of the Romans Germanic Philology faculty and gave a lecture on the importance of French culture and language in the modern world.
• On April 9, 2014, a creative meeting was held at the Faculty of Romans Germanic Philology with the French novelist and screenwriter Mr. David Fonkinos, laureate of Francois Moriak prize. During the meeting, the writer analyzed current trends in French literature, introduced those present with his new novel and shared his creative plans.
• On November 8, 2016, Mr. Fabrice Peto, Attache of the French Embassy in Ukraine for cooperation in the field of French, and Mr. Sylvain RIGOLLE, Attache of the French Embassy in Ukraine for university and scientific cooperation, visited the faculty of French Philology and presented the prospectives on the cooperation of the Faculty of Romans Germanic Philology and the Embassy of France in Ukraine, with the project held in Kiev in 2017, an international French-language scientific conference for teachers of Ukrainian universities with the participation of foreign scientists.
• On June 6-7, 2017, the faculty of Faculty of Romans Germanic Philology was visited by a professor at the University of Paris 13, the head of the Laboratory 鈥淰ocabulary. Dictionaries. Data Processing鈥�, Ms Gabrielle Le Talleck Llore and a member of the Commission for Scientific Research and the Academic Council of the University of Paris-13 Oleg Kurbatov, who got acquainted with the scientific activities of faculty teachers and discussed possible areas of scientific cooperation.
• On June 7, 2017, Professor Le Talleck Llore spoke to teachers and students with lectures on 鈥淩eduction and re-suffixation in modern French鈥�, 鈥淔rench anaphoric words en and y: diachronic and contrastive approaches (French / Spanish)鈥�.
• On October 24, 2017, the Faculty of Romans Germanic Philology was visited by Mr. Fabrice PETO, Attache of the French Embassy in Ukraine for cooperation in the field of French, Ms. Roxana Turkanu-TOLOME, Head of the Chisinau branch of the University Agency of Francophonie, Mrs. Claudia Vishan, responsible for Chisinau projects offices of the UAF, and Mrs. Diana BANGURA, director of the Alliance Francaise in Odessa, who attended the opening of the French Language Center, equipped with technical means, received as a gift from the Chisinau branch of UAF.
• On November 30, 2017, the Faculty of Romans Germanic Philology was visited by the Ambassador of France to Ukraine, Ms. Isabelle Dumont, accompanied by Ms. Marie-Annique Dewar, Coordinator of the French Alliances in Ukraine, and Ms. Diana BANGURA, Director of the Alliance Frances, Odessa. Ms. Dumont gave a lecture on the topic 鈥淔rench Foreign Policy鈥� to students and teachers of the Faculty of Romans Germanic Philology and answered their questions.
• The translator of literature, Filip Noubel, visited the Department of Translation Theory and Practice of the Faculty of Romans Germanic Philology (March, October 2018). Mr. Filip Noubel gave a multimedia lecture to students of the Department of Translation Theory and Practice on the topic 鈥淔eatures of Translation from / into Greek鈥�.
• A meeting with the American writer Keith Skribner was held at the Department of Foreign Literature, during which the author presented his works and introduced modern American literature to students (March 2018).
• Professor of the University of Palencia, Spain Miguel de la Fuente Gonz谩lez visited the Faculty of Romans Germanic Philology in order to disseminate and promote the language, culture and literature of Spain in Ukraine with a course of lectures on scientific and practical topics: 1) Algunos solutionmas de puntuaci贸n por contig眉idades sint谩cticas en espa帽ol; 2) Gloria Fuertes (Madrid 1917-1998): su poes铆a en su centenario 3) Caracter铆sticas y casos actuales de la comunicaci贸n de los espa帽oles 4) Pr谩cticas de conversaci贸n (March 2018).
• According to the ERASMUS + project, a visit was helt by specialists from the University of Granada, Spain: Pilar C谩ceres Rece, Juan Manuel Trujillo Torres, Inmaculada Asnar Diaz, Antonio Manuel Rodriguez Garc铆a and Francisco Javier Inho Lucen (April 2018).
• On October 11, 2018, a meeting between students and teachers of the German Department with the Ambassador of the Federal Republic of Germany, Mr. E. Reichel, was held.
• On October 16, 2018, a meeting of students and teachers of the German department with the rector of the University of W眉rzburg (Germany) was held. Foreign specialists who trained at the Faculty of Romans Germanic Philology of the ONU named after I.I. Mechnikov.
• January - May 2018 academic year at the Department of French Philology, in accordance with the agreement between Odessa National University named after I.I. Mechnikov and the Department of Cultural and Linguistic Cooperation of the Embassy of France in Ukraine, Mr. Julien LE MENELEK, an intern in the specialty 鈥淭eacher - Teacher of Youth Work鈥�, completed training in teaching French as a foreign citizen of France.
• From February 5, 2018 to May 4, 2018, training was held to teach French as a foreign language, Mrs. NOEMI RECHI, 鈥嬧�媋 graduate of the University of Toulouse named after Jean Jaur猫s, specializing in Teaching and Didactics of French as a Foreign Language.
• In the first semester of the 2018-2019 academic year, Ms. Laura Bert, a graduate of the University of Artois, specializing in Teaching and Didactics of French as a Foreign Language, completed atraining program in teaching French language from November 1, 2018 to December 15, 2018.
• Foreign teachers work at the Department of German Philology: interns Michael Mroz (09/01/17-30.06.18), Fanny Helena Venus (09/01/18 - to the present).
• At the Department of French Philology from 1.03.-05.26.2019 citizen of France Samantha Gaina completed an internship to teach French as a foreign language.
• On March 25, 2019, the Faculty of Romance-Germanic Philology was visited by Mr. Benjamin Beckner, Executive Secretary of the International Cultural Association 鈥淔rench without Borders鈥�. Mr. B. Beckner met with students of the departments of French and English Philology of the Faculty of Romance-Germanic Philology of University named after I.I. Mechnikov.
• On April 2, 2019, a meeting of teachers and students of the Department of Spanish Philology with the Ambassador of Spain to Ukraine, Ms. Sylvia Josefine Cortez Martin, was held.
• April 17 - 25, 2019, A professor at the University of Palencia, Spain, Miguel de la Fuente Gonz谩lez, gave a course of lectures and practical classes in literary and cultural studies: Short poetic forms in Spanish; Some modern Hispanic poets; Communicative characteristics of modern Spaniards; A look at the current political situation in Spain; Practical classes in Spanish.
• On May 23, 2019, a meeting with OSCE representatives: Irene Ballesteros (Spain), Cornelius Nolen (USA), Marinka Franulovic (Croatia) was held.
• On September 27, 2019, meetings with the Swiss writer Johann Lier and the German writer of Hungarian origin, Theresa Morea were held.
• On October 3-4, 2019, the Department of French Philology organized and held the third International Francophone Conference in Ukraine 鈥淟anguages 鈥嬧�媜f Science and Practice鈥� with the support of the Embassy of France in Ukraine and the University Agency of Francophonie, in which 33 foreign specialists and 4 official foreign persons took part. • On October 9, 2019, at the Department of Spanish Philology and the Center for Country Studies in Spain, together with the Institute for Advanced Studies of Teachers held a seminar on the representative of the publishing house of Spanish textbooks ELE Pilar Garcia for school teachers, teachers of the Department of Spanish Philology and students of the Spanish department.
• On December 3, 2019, representatives of the OSCE, Irene Ballesteros (Spain) and Cornelius Nolen (USA), in the framework of a comprehensive project against gender-based violence, held a conversation with students studying Spanish as the main and second foreign language.

Specialized Academic Council D 41.051.02 works at the Faculty of Romance-Germanic Philology. By the order of the Ministry of Education and Science of Ukraine No. 975 of July 11, 2019, the specialized academic council was granted the right to conduct defense of PhD and doctoral theses in the specialties 10.02.01 - Ukrainian language and 10.02.04 - German languages 鈥嬧�媐or the period up to 31.12.2020. Scientific conferences:

The main event of 2019 was holding the 3rd International Francophone Conference in Ukraine "Languages, Sciences and Practices" with the support of the French Embassy in Ukraine and the University Agency of France, attended by 210 specialists from different fields, 40 of them foreign participants from 25 countries. Conference materials are published.

The Department of Foreign Languages 鈥嬧�媜f the Faculties of Natural Sciences held the 1st International (V Online) Scientific and Practical Internet Conference 鈥淩esearch and implementation of modern models of foreign language teaching in the educational process: linguistic and methodological and international perspectives鈥�, based on the materials of which the collection of papers was published.

Specializations and qualifications:

Specialists who leave the ranks of the Romance-Germanic Faculty become teachers of two foreign languages: English / German / French / Spanish and translators from English / German / French / Spanish / Italian / Modern Greek / Chinese.

The faculty provides a unique opportunity for applicants who have a ZNO (External Independent Test) certificate in English to study at the departments of German, French and Spanish philology from the initial level (without prior knowledge of these languages). Thanks to intensive techniques, in two years they reach the required level of language competencies and continue training under the appropriate program. Students also study a third foreign language: German / French / Spanish / Italian / New Greek / Romanian / Chinese. As a specialty, foreign literature is taught at the faculty from ancient works of ancient Greece and Rome to modern literature from around the world.

Odessa I.I. Mechnikov National University as an educational institution of the highest (fourth) level of accreditation, issues its graduates a diploma that meets high domestic and foreign standards.

It aims at familiarising students with the basic notions of Grammar, like the part of speech and parts of speech in English as well as the ways they function in English sentences; the sentence, its communicative types, and typical English word order in them; the sentence member and basic sentence members in the English sentence.   This course focuses on basic principles of constructing a simple sentence in modern English. Students are taught to differentiate communicative and structural types of simple sentences, to distinguish between the core of a sentence and its adjuncts. The proposed special course involves the study of a certain system of dependence of the grammatical tense of a verb in a subordinate clause on the grammatical tense used in the principle clause of a complex sentence.   The special course is devoted to the basic principles of expressing unreality in English through the prism of the logical and philosophical concept of subjective modality. The main goal of the course is to highlight grammatical principles of constructing modal utterances and their use in current speech. The material is delivered with the view of practical use of the oblique moods in the English language, taking into account diachronic trends of its development. The course consists of the theoretical part, which examines the concept of "subjective modality", means of expressing modality, types of the oblique moods and their basic speech models in English. The practical part of the course is devoted to training students actively to employ different types of moods in their current speech.

  The course of lectures makes one of the most difficult topics in Grammar, i.e. syntactic complexes, quite easy and comprehensible.   The discipline is dedicated to highlighting the principles of comprehension, production and perception of speech. The main purpose of the course is to familiarize students with the basics of psycholinguistics in order to prevent difficulties with teaching material in future professional activities, as well as to understand better the features of memory functioning and speech competence of information recipients. Lecture topics include speech ontogenesis, the level of speech perception: psychological mechanisms, internal vocabulary, speech production models, conversion interactions. It is also planned to conduct psycholinguistic experiments, interpretation and analysis of their results.

  Foundations of Cognitive Onomastics (Doctor in Philology, Assoc. Prof. V.Neklesova)

  The course is dedicated to the study of proper names, onyms, and is designed for all who are interested in proper names. The leading problem of cognitive onomastics is mental being of proper names. Onyms enter mental lexicon daily in great quantities, but only necessary, subjectively valuable remain there and transform, being coded in concepts. Emerging into speech they undergo transformation being encoded into words. Onymic concepts are connected with other elements of mental lexicon as their organizers, optimizing the functioning of mental lexicon and increasing its effectiveness.

  Framing of the mental lexicon (PhD in Linguistics, Assoc. Prof. M. Karpenko)

  The purpose of the educational discipline is to acquaint students with the functions and transformation of proper names in the language mentality, to trace the interrelationships of language, speech and thinking, to investigate the formation of the mental lexicon and its organization into a number of onymic frames in the linguistic consciousness of a person. The main task of the course is to study the principles of framing the mental lexicon of an individual, to consider anonymous frames. As a result of studying the academic discipline, the student of higher education should learn the processes of conceptualization and categorization of common and proper names, be able to follow the interrelationships of various onymic frames, investigate the formation of the onymic component of a person's mental lexicon.

  Intra- and Extra-Lingual Determiners of Universal Attractiveness (Doctor in Philology, Full Professor I.Morozova)

  The given course considers the problem of intra- and extra-lingual means of creating (and self-creating) appealing personalities. The peculiarity of the suggested approach consists in a close study of obviously negative virtual and real personalities who are known to enjoy universal sympathy despite their evil natures. The course discloses various mental-and-lingual mechanisms of creating particular personal images, with focusing on the verbal side of the process and a communicative models study. The course consists of a theoretical part, which introduces the basic concepts of Feminist Linguistics, as well as the method of Feminist Critical Discourse Analysis. During practical classes, students develop the skills of analytical reading of women's texts, learn to identify patriarchal stereotypes and analyze the vocabulary that represents them.

  The course is intended for the 3d year students of Romance-Germanic Faculty majoring in English. It introduces the key concepts and basic notes on Narratology and Narrative, clarifies the types of organising Narrative. The lecturers are aimed at specifying the main types of Narrative such as "ich -erzahlung", "er-erzahlung", "entrusted narrative". The notion of Narrator such as Author-1, Author-2, non-ordinary narrator is also focused on. To sum up, the diachronic development of the main types of Narrative is represented.   Communication works for those who work on it! The series of workshops is designed for the students interested in advancing their knowledge and developing their competence of Professional Communication Skills in order to hold the key of communication in business context. The course, conducted fully in English, gives the participants an opportunity, on the one hand, to brush up accuracy and fluency of their language, and, on the other hand, to deepen their expertise in communicating more effectively in the frame of business environment. All classes are supported by a range of Video and Audio materials, a variety of communicative activities and a number of language tasks both focused on training business vocabulary, arranging information in logical order and reaching clear and coherent structure.   The special course is intended for the 1st year students as the introduction to the theory of English intonation, its structure elements and functions. Intonation is a powerful means of human intercommunication and the communicative function of intonation is considered most important.

  As the main goal of the students of our department is to sound correct, natural and understandable, it is essential to learn to organize your speech logically adequate, i.e. to divide the sentences into smaller units (intonation groups/ thought groups/chunks/sense groups). English is a time-stressed language thus rhythm and stress are of our major interest here. To make the communicative act successful it is also important to be aware of the peculiarities of the intonation patterns in accordance with the speaker鈥檚 communicative intention (i.e. whether the phrase is a question, exclamation, statement etc.). Finally, intonation serves to convey connotational meaning of 鈥� attitude鈥� such as surprise, annoyance, enthusiasm, involvement, etc. . and thus the speaker sounds vibrant and expressive. Any shade of feeling or attitude can be conveyed by changes in pitch, widening or narrowing the voice rang, modifying the tempo, increasing or decreasing the loudness of the voice by changing its quality, using emphatic tones and Heads and in various other ways. These basic peculiarities of English speech are in focus of this course. The materials are presented using audio and video resources.

The meaning-distinguishing function of intonation is carried out due to the opposition of utterances that differ in certain intonation parameters - melody, phrasal stress, volume, tempo, rhythm, pause, timbre of the speaker's voice.

  Neuro-lingual and theolingual mechanisms of speech activity

  The course is intended for second-year masters of the Faculty of Romance and Germanic Philology. The complex theoretical discipline provides for a step-by-step two-level consideration of the mechanisms of speech generation.

  From the point of view of neurolinguistics, the brain mechanisms of speech activity and the associated speech-thinking processes are described, namely: the ways of obtaining sensory information (vision, hearing, smell, taste, touch), its further cognitive processing and subsequent transformation into speech. The neuro-lingual organization of mental processes of creation and understanding of an utterance is considered.

  From the point of view of theolinguistics as a modern synthetic discipline aimed at theological comprehension of the linguistic processes occurring in religious discourse, religious discourse is considered as a multi-level communication carried out in two planes - horizontal (communication of a clergyman with believers) and vertical (communication of a person with the Almighty).

  The recommended special course aims at familiarizing the students with the development of German language, starting with the Old High German period, when the language existed in a large number of different dialects, to its present state, i.e. Standardsprache. The theoretical and practical materials of the course will help to confirm the fact that it is the dialects that formed the basis for the development and formation of unified German national language, that a dialect is genetically linked to a language in the course of historical development. In practical classes, while analyzing modern texts taken from newspapers and books written in certain German dialects, students, comparing them to identical texts written in Standarddeutsche, should recognize the territorially marked linguistic units and those, which are due to different fluctuations led to a new state of the language and became its new attractor. The students are supposed to take the end-of-course tests bases on the presented material. The students will be able to apply the acquired knowledge for writing coursework assignments, bachelors and masters theses.

  The special course is aimed at exploring the versatility of the possibilities of works of art, from the point of view of their interpretation and vision by specialists of different genres of art.   The course introduces students to modern forms of interaction between literature and new media and the Internet. The seminar examines new forms and genres of digital literature (author blogs, digital poetry, network novels, writing collaborative projects), as well as forms of media presence in contemporary post-digital literature. An overview of the main aesthetic categories of online literature is offered: hypertextuality, interactivity, multimedia, performativity etc. Particular attention is paid to significant changes in the field of literary production in the digital age, the possibilities of online publishing (printing on demand), as well as the means and forms of author's self-presentation on the Internet.

  Myth Tradition in Modern Literature and Culture 懈 PhD in Linguistics, Assoc. Prof. O. Kholodov)

  Our course studies the archaic components in the modern literature and culture. We will concentrate on the mythopoetics as a cultural phenomenon. In our course we prove that it is in the nature of myth to appeal to the 鈥榤ost fundamental aspects of human existence, including among others values, beliefs, imagination, art, culture and language鈥� and to penetrate into all levels of cultural encounter: from religion to leisure, from entertainment to education, from literature to TV commercials. Ancient myth informs and invigorates the arts and manifests itself through everyday practices, beliefs, institutions within various contemporary cultures. Our course will examine the narrative dimensions of myth and literature as well as their intersection in matters of belief and linguistics. We will investigate extraliterary perspectives of myth such as anthropological, psychological, philosophical, and semiotic. The course鈥� goals are that the students

  • get acquainted with major existing theories of myth;
  • are able to trace the transformation and manifestations of the fundamental myths across space and time;
  • obtain the practical skills for the examination of the mythological subtexts in literature and film, myth patterns in media message and political ideology;

  The proposed course is addressed to the students who are interested in learning about and exploring the most important trends in American literature and the most significant American novels of the second half of the twentieth century, beginning of the twenty-first century within the paradigm of multiculturalism. This including authors of Southern, African-American, Mexican, Native American, Afghan, Jewish literary schools. During the course the students develop skills and analysis of artistic text. Course materials consist of lectures and video presentations. Students will have the opportunity to write reviews of interesting texts in contemporary American literature.

  The aim of the course is to define the boundaries of the concept "young-adult" literature in native and foreign literary studies. The characteristic features of the hero of literature "young-adult" are determined. The course outlines the genres of young-adult reading: young-adult dystopia (V.   In our course the students will get acquainted with the most recent synergetic studies in the area of the transitional periods and unstable aesthetic systems; obtain the knowledge of such concepts as 鈥渙rder-chaos鈥�, 鈥減attern-randomness鈥�, 鈥渢hinking variability鈥�, 鈥渢urbulence鈥�, 鈥渟elf-organized process鈥� which may be applied to the literary studies; become aware of the main features of the creative worldview in the transitional/unstable periods.   The course involves the study of the concept of "communicative strategy" at the level of diachrony and synchronicity, the study of different communication models, the selection of the most relevant and effective models in the specified period in the texts of English playwrights. Within the course students develop the ability to creatively interpret and analyze dramatic texts in English and national languages, identify techniques for creating dramatic texts, determine their genre specificity. As a result of comparative analysis, students develop skills of generalization, ways of processing and transformation of known topics and subjects, skills of participation in scientific and applied research in the field of philology. The choice of elective disciplines is carried out in accordance with the "Regulation on the Procedure for the Realization by Applicants of Higher Education of the Right to Free Choice of Study Disciplines at Odesa National University named after I.I.听Mechnikov", in particular, in accordance with paragraphs. 4.3, 4.4, and 4.5:

• In 2001 graduated from the full-time doctoral studies of the Odesa I.I. Mechnikov National University at the Department of French Philology (specialty 13.00.02 鈥� Theory and Methods of Teaching) in time with a recommendation for defense. The doctoral dissertation has passed the international scientific examination by specialists of the Bordeaux Michel Montagne University with the conclusion the need for further joint international leadership. As part of it, developed the author's video course "Strategies of Communicative Behavior", filmed in Austria and France.
• In 2003, was appointed to the position of Deputy Head of the Department of Economics 鈥� Head of the Department of Foreign Economic Relations of the Izmail City Council.
• Since 2004 has been invited to the Odesa I.I. Mechnikov National University as a senior lecturer, since 2005 as an associate professor of the Department of Foreign Languages of the Humanities Faculties.

• Graduated with honours from Odessa National I. I. Mechnikov University, (specialty 鈥� "English language and literature");
• 2010: began her career as a lecturer at the Department of Foreign Languages 鈥嬧�媐or the Science Faculties;
• 2015: defended her PhD thesis, topic: "Sociolinguistic features of Yorkshire dialect (instrumental phonetic research of oral speech)" (specialty 10.02.04 - Germanic languages) at Odessa National I. I. Mechnikov University;
• 2015: attended 'CiVELT (English for Specific Purposes)' summer school with the support of British Council Ukraine;
• 2016: attended 'EAP (English for Academic Purposes)' winter school with the support of British Council Ukraine;
• 2016: taught under Erasmus + KA107 Exchange program at the Department of English and American Studies at the University of Ostrava (Czech Republic);
