Ilya Ilf, pseudonym of听Iehiel-Leyb Arnoldovich Faynzilberg听(Russian:听袠谢褜褟 袗褉薪芯谢褜写芯胁懈褔 肖邪泄薪蟹懈谢褜斜械褉谐[1]), (October 15听[O.S.听October 3]听1897 in听Odessa听鈥� April 13, 1937,听Moscow), was a popular听Soviet听journalist and writer of Jewish origin who usually worked in collaboration with听Yevgeni Petrov听during the 1920s and 1930s. Their duo was known simply as听Ilf and Petrov. Together they published two popular comedy novels听The Twelve Chairs听(1928) and听The Little Golden Calf听(1931), as well as a satirical book听One-storied America听(often translated as听Little Golden America) that documented their journey through the United States between 1935 and 1936.
His father was a Jewish bank clerk. He graduated from a technical school in 1913 and held various positions, including time at the telephone company and a military plant. After the听Revolution, he began working as a journalist, editing several humor magazines, and joined the Odessa Union of Poets.
In 1923, he relocated to Moscow and took employment at the newspaper听Gudok听[ru]听(roughly "Beep", also a type of stringed instrument), a publication for railway workers. His contributions consisted mostly of satirical pieces. It was there that he met his writing partner, Petrov.听
Ilf had been diagnosed with听tuberculosis听in the 1920s. He thought it was in remission, but he was diagnosed with it again during his trip to听America, and he died not long after returning to Moscow.
