Biography:

  • In 1991, she graduated from the National Institute of Oriental Languages ​​and Civilizations (major: modern Greek language)
  • From 1991 to 1993, she worked as a teacher of the Greek language in Prague
  • From 1993 to 1995, she taught modern Greek language and literature at Vilnius State University, as well as French at the Center of French Culture named after O. Milosh;
  • In 1995, she obtained a master's degree at the National Institute of Oriental Languages ​​and Cultures in Paris (INALCO: National Institute of Oriental Languages ​​and Cultures, Paris), specialty "Modern Greek";
  • Since 1996, he has been working as a senior lecturer at Odesa National University named after I. I. Mechnikova;
  • Since 1999, he has been working as a senior teacher of Modern Greek at the Odesa Center of Greek Culture;
  • Founded the center of Hellenistics at the Faculty of Romano-Germanic Philology of the ONU named after I. I. Mechnikova; the library of the center currently has about 3,000 copies;
  • In October 2002, she taught modern Greek language and literature to students of 1-5 years and teachers of the department of classical philology at the Lviv National University named after I. Franka;
  • In January 2004, she taught Modern Greek language and literature to students of the Faculty of Classical Philology of Haifa State University (Israel)
  • In February 2020, she defended her PhD thesis on the specialty "Theory and Methodology of Professional Education": "Preparation of future foreign language teachers for intercultural education".

  • Since 2021, in the position of associate professor of the department of professional foreign languages.
  • In November 2023, she entered doctoral studies at I.I. Mechnikov National University, majoring in "035 Philology". The topic of the doctoral dissertation: "Communication strategies in Ukrainian and French theatrical works of the second half of the 20th - beginning of the 21st century."
  • Since September 2024, associate professor of the Department of Foreign Literature, Faculty of Romano-Germanic Philology.

According to the order of the Ministry of Education and Science of Ukraine dated December 10, 2024 No. 1721, the title of Associate Professor of the Department of Foreign Languages ​​of a professional orientation was awarded.

In 2005, graduated with honors from the Odesa I.I. Mechnikov National University, majoring in "Language and Literature (German)"

She raduated from the Odesa I.I. Mechnikov National University, in 2009 she defended her thesis "The Concept of Europe in the Essays of D. Gojovy, Yu. Andruhovich, A. Stasyuk: Comparative Discourse" at the Institute of Literature named after T. G. Shevchenko of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine on the specialty 10.01.05 "comparative literature".

In 2014, she received the academic title of associate professor of the Department of Foreign Literature.

Currently, she is an associate professor of the Department of Foreign Literature of the I. I. Mechnikov National University.

Brushing up the knowledge obtained at school and enlightening students on the seemingly easy, but, in fact, quite intricate problems of English grammar, the present course lays the groundwork for those majoring in English and willing to enjoy a safe start at university. It aims at familiarising students with the basic notions of Grammar, like the part of speech and parts of speech in English as well as the ways they function in English sentences; the sentence, its communicative types, and typical English word order in them; the sentence member and basic sentence members in the English sentence. The lectures also cover all types of questions, together with their communicative peculiarities. Students will get to know more about the pronouns It and There and their roles in impersonal and nominative sentences & sentences of unclear existence (There is time… Vs It is time…).

Grammatical Peculiarities of a Simple Sentence (PhD in Linguistics, Assoc. Prof. О. Lymarenko)

The course is devoted to highlighting the basic principles of the simple sentence organization in modern English. Students will get acquainted with communicative types and structural models of a simple sentence, learn to distinguish the grammatical basis of a simple sentence, distinguish secondary members of a sentence. Practical skills for constructing different structural models of a simple sentence depending on the communicative intention of the speaker will be developed as well..

The aim of the course is to acquaint students with the origin, development, structure of Germanic languages, their mutual connections, common patterns and trends in their development and structure. The educational discipline considers the facts of historical changes as a manifestation of general laws and specific features and trends in their inextricable connection with the conditions of existence of the Germanic languages, provides a historical explanation of the main features of the modern system of Germanic languages, which developed as a result of centuries-old development, based on historical, ethnographic, archaeological data on the origin, life, social structure of the ancient Germans.

Peculiarities of Phrasal Verb Usage in the English Language (PhD in Pedagogy, Assoc. Prof. O. Khromchenko)

The course is designed to empower university students with comprehensive knowledge and practical skills in effectively using phrasal verbs. This course aims to address the challenges students often encounter when dealing with these complex linguistic structures. Through a combination of theoretical insights and hands-on exercises, participants will gain a deep understanding of the nuances, meanings, and applications of phrasal verbs in various contexts. Upon completing the course, students can expect to have a solid foundation in using phrasal verbs effectively. The course focuses on the unique aspects of utilizing the project method to teach subject matters with a professional orientation. The main objectives are to foster research skills, nurture creative aptitude, and enhance the intellectual curiosity of higher education students. This course comprises two main components: a theoretical segment that delves into the analysis of diverse scholarly viewpoints regarding the essence of the "project method." It also involves classifying educational projects based on various perspectives concerning the feasibility of incorporating design elements into the educational process. The practical aspect of the course centers on guiding students in crafting their own projects. Opting for this specialized course offers several valuable outcomes: the ability to think independently, tackle issues using knowledge from multiple disciplines, formulate hypotheses, draw conclusions, and ultimately, break away from a purely formal approach to education. Principles of Sequence of Grammatical Tenses (PhD in Pedagogy, Assoc. Prof. O. Khromchenko)

The special course is dedicated to highlighting the main principles of sequence of grammatical tenses in the English language. The proposed special course involves the study of a certain system of dependence of the grammatical tense of a verb in a subordinate clause on the grammatical tense used in the principal clause of a complex sentence. The special course, which is taught in English, gives students the opportunity to improve their foreign language communication skills, since the rules of sequence of tenses are used in indirect (reported) speech.

3rd year

Non-Finite Forms of the Verb (PhD in Linguistics, Assoc. Prof. О. Lymarenko)

This course focuses on the non-finite forms of the verb (verbals) in English: their forms, syntactic functions in the sentence, peculiarities of their realisation in modern English. Special attention is drawn to the comparative analysis of the verbals usage in different types of sentences in formal and informal English.  

Realization of the Category of Modality (PhD in Linguistics, Assoc. Prof. О. Lymarenko)

This course aims at building students’ practical competence in the usage of modal verbs in moden English. For this purpose the following topics are highlighted: the notion of the category of modality as means of presenting (un)real attitude of the speaker towards the objective world; types of modality and its realisation in the English language; the usage of modal verbs (their classification, grammatical forms and semantic meaning).

4th year

Verbalization of Unreality in English (Doctor in Philology, Full Professor I. Morozova)

The special course is devoted to the basic principles of expressing unreality in English through the prism of the logical and philosophical concept of subjective modality. The main goal of the course is to highlight grammatical principles of constructing modal utterances and their use in current speech. The material is delivered with the view of practical use of the oblique moods in the English language, taking into account diachronic trends of its development. The course consists of the theoretical part, which examines the concept of "subjective modality", means of expressing modality, types of the oblique moods and their basic speech models in English. The practical part of the course is devoted to training students actively to employ different types of moods in their current speech.

Syntactic Complexes (PhD in Linguistics, Assoc. Prof. O. Pozharytska, PhD in Linguistics, Assoc. Prof. O. Vasylieva)

The course of lectures makes one of the most difficult topics in Grammar, i.e. syntactic complexes, quite easy and comprehensible. With an ample amount of time on our hands, we’ll dedicate enough classes to understanding the communicative functions of infinitive, gerundial, and participle complexes and phrases, see their possible transformations and the way they function in modern English. In fact, syntactic complexes are a turn of phrase that will make your speech sound English, so coming to grips with them is another step to fluency and proficiency.

Syntactic Sentence Analysis (PhD in Linguistics, Assoc. Prof. M. Karpenko)

The course covers the basic concepts of analysing a simple sentence. In particular, attention is paid to the following points:

  • Differentiation of various sentence members;
  • Typical ways of expressing each sentence member;
  • Analysis of the morphological characteristics of various parts of speech;
  • Types and subtypes of the subject, predicate, object, adverbial modifier, attribute;
  • Structural and communicative classification of sentences.

The Peculiarities of Teaching the English Language to “Digital Natives” (PhD in Pedagogy, Assoc. Prof. O. Khromchenko)

In today's world, where technology is an integral part of our lives, the issue of teaching English to the digital generation becomes particularly relevant. The proposed special course is dedicated to the fundamental aspects of teaching English to students who belong to “digital natives”. During the course, higher education students will learn how to utilize digital technologies, interactive teaching methods, and adapt sessions to digital formats. The course will cover areas such as the development of digital literacy among students, the use of visual and audio-visual tools in teaching, the creation of digital resources and materials for teaching English, and the adaptation of traditional teaching methods to digital formats.

Modern Linguistic Trends (PhD in Linguistics, Assoc. Prof. M. Karpenko, PhD in Linguistics, Assoc. Prof. O. Pozharytska)

The course is orientated at the systematisation and generalisation of the attendees’ knowledge in modern trends in linguistics, including those in teaching foreign languages. It gives the attendees a substantial platform to find their way in the wide scope of different linguistic and didactic problems and single out the most essential trends for their further professional development. The course also highlights modern methodological and linguistic approaches for a deep study of language units of different levels.

Academic Discourse (Doctor in Philology, Assoc. Prof. V. Neklesova)

The course is intended for a comprehensive study of aspects of academic discourse. Its main goal is to provide students with theoretical and practical knowledge in the field of discursive activity related to the academic world. During the course, students will familiarize themselves with the basic concepts of academic discourse and its varieties and components. Attention will be paid to such components as chronotope, goals, values, strategies, material, discursive formulas and participants of academic discourse. Students will develop skills in critical thinking and analysis of academic discourse texts. The course will contribute to the preparation of students for independent scientific work in the field of philology, literary studies and translation.

2nd year

Psycholinguistics (Doctor in Philology, Full Professor O. Karpenko)

The discipline is dedicated to highlighting the principles of comprehension, production and perception of speech. The main purpose of the course is to familiarize students with the basics of psycholinguistics in order to prevent difficulties with teaching material in future professional activities, as well as to understand better the features of memory functioning and speech competence of information recipients. Lecture topics include speech ontogenesis, the level of speech perception: psychological mechanisms, internal vocabulary, speech production models, conversion interactions. It is also planned to conduct psycholinguistic experiments, interpretation and analysis of their results.

Foundations of Cognitive Onomastics (Doctor in Philology, Assoc. Prof. V. Neklesova)

The course is dedicated to the study of proper names, onyms, and is designed for all who are interested in proper names. The leading problem of cognitive onomastics is mental being of proper names. Onyms enter mental lexicon daily in great quantities, but only necessary, subjectively valuable remain there and transform, being coded in concepts. Emerging into speech they undergo transformation being encoded into words. Onymic concepts are connected with other elements of mental lexicon as their organizers, optimizing the functioning of mental lexicon and increasing its effectiveness.

Verbal Components of Psychological Influence (PhD in Linguistics, Assoc. Prof. M. Karpenko)

This course is dedicated to a detailed study of the mechanisms of verbal influence. The primary goal of the course is to provide students with in-depth knowledge about the principles and techniques of influence used in various communicative situations. Throughout the course, students will explore key psychological triggers such as reciprocation, commitment, social proof, liking, authority, scarcity, and automaticity, as well as examine their roles in shaping behavior and decision-making. Special attention will be paid to the ethical considerations in applying these principles and developing skills to recognize and defend against manipulative techniques. Students will acquire practical skills in analyzing verbal strategies of influence and applying them to achieve professional objectives, which will enhance their development in fields such as communication, psychology, marketing, and education.

Intra- and Extra-Lingual Determiners of Universal Attractiveness (Doctor in Philology, Full Professor I. Morozova)

The given course considers the problem of intra- and extra-lingual means of creating (and self-creating) appealing personalities. The peculiarity of the suggested approach consists in a close study of obviously negative virtual and real personalities who are known to enjoy universal sympathy despite their evil natures. The course discloses various mental-and-lingual mechanisms of creating particular personal images, with focusing on the verbal side of the process and a communicative models’ study. The students are supposed to be familiarized with R. Sassower’s conception of “global and universal appeal” and with image-making elaborations suggested by Harvard University. The course will result in giving its attendees practical skills in verbal modelling granting a positive feedback from the audience addressed.

The English Grammar Department was founded in 1963 by a prominent linguist, Doctor of Philology, Full Professor Andrew Korsakov, who was the leader of the department for 30 years. Prof. Korsakov is the author of more than 500 scientific works, among which are such studies as “The Use of Tenses in Modern English” and “Foundations of Modern English Grammar”. Under the supervision of Prof. Korsakov 1 doctoral and more than 30 PhD theses were successfully defended.

From 1989 to 2008 the department was headed by PhD in Linguistics, Assistant Professor Victoria Kolyada, who is the author of more than 150 scientific works, textbooks, and manuals, including “Syntactic Analysis of the Composite Sentence” and “Methodology of Teaching Foreign Languages”. For her great achievements in teaching activities V. Kolyada was distinguished with the honorary award for Excellence in Education in 2010.

Since 2008 the Department has been headed by Olena Karpenko, Doctor of Philology, Full Professor, the author or more than 150 scientific works, including the monograph “Problematics of Cognitive Onomastics” and the textbook “Cognitive Onomastics”. Under her supervision 1 doctoral and 12 PhD theses were defended.

The educational activity of the department consists in the training of specialists in several directions. First of all, it is the teaching of English grammar to students, future teachers of English and Spanish, and translators. The teachers of the department also introduce students to the scientific and philological world by teaching compulsory and optional theoretical courses.

The lecturers of the department also supervise teaching and translation practices of the students, as well supervise the students’ scientific papers.

Scientific Activity

The department works on the research theme “Research of the functional and pragmatic features of the linguistic-cognitive organization of language units” (st. num. 0124U002611, 2024-2028) under the guidance of Professor O. Karpenko. The results of the research are published in articles, abstracts, monographs, textbooks, presented at Ukrainian and international conferences, defended as doctoral and PhD theses. During the period from 2008 to 2024, 18 candidate and 3 doctoral theses were defended at the department.

Professors of the department participate in the work of specialized councils for the defense of PhD and doctoral theses, function as members of various editorial boards of philological journals. Prof. Karpenko is Chief Editor of the philological journal “Opera in Onomastica” (Index Copernicus).

Annual students’ and professors’ scientific conferences dedicated to modern linguistic issues are held at the department.

Textbooks of Prof. Morozova I.B. and Associate Professor Pozharytska O.O. "The Use of the Non-Finites" and the two-volume "The Use of Modal Verbs and Moods" were recognized as the "Best Publications of 2021-2023" (2nd place) at the All-Ukrainian competition held annually by the National Academy of Sciences of Higher Education of Ukraine.

Grammar Club

Grammar Club is another activity carried out at the Department ofEnglish Grammar. This students’ club specialises in tackling modernproblems of practical and theoretical grammar and general linguistics.The Grammar Club aims at arousing students’ interest in the grammarresearch and works under the guidance of Professor Iryna B. Morozovawho is President of the Club. The post of Vice-President andeditor-in-chief of the wall newspaper, published monthly by themembers of the Grammar Club, is held by Olena Pozharytska, a younglecturer.

During the distant education, the Grammr Club continues working online.

Tests

On April 4, 2025, Grammar Club members were happy to visit a guest lecture from Alina Nilohova, a translator and Head of the project support department at “ArcelorMittal” where they got to know the first-hand experience of the professional technical translators’ backstage.   • In 2016 graduated with honours from South Ukrainian Ushinsky National Pedagogical University, Department of the Chinese Studies;
  • In 2016-2017 underwent professional training at Harbin University of Engineering (Heilongjiang, People's Republic of China), specialty – "Chinese language" for a period of 1 semester;
  • In 2019 graduated with honours from Kiev Shevchenko National University, Department of the Chinese language and literature;
  • In 2019 started to serve as the head of the " Chinese language center" at the Romance-Germanic Faculty;
